Hi Barry - no doubt you'll get as many different opinions as answers, but here goes with my advice: Buying a sextant can be expensive. You can learn as much with your Davis as with an Astra. Perhaps later you can look at buying one. I have had an interest in celestial for about 18 years - but I have to admit that while it's fascinating stuff - it will be backup rather than my primary form of nav. if I am cruising. Don't let that stop you learning it though - it is very rewarding. I would just suggest that you find out a bit more before you take the (expensive) plunge. I haven't used a celesticomp - but if you can afford it - perhaps not a bad idea as long as you don't use it in lieu of learning with the sight reduction tables. Can it be used as an almanac? Of course the idea is to be independent of electronics though. Happy learning Russell -----Original Message----- From Barry Colman [SMTP:delta611@EARTHLINK.NET] Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 1999 3:31 PM To: NAVIGATION-L@LISTSERV.WEBKAHUNA.COM Subject: Sextants Im a beginning Celestial Navigator and am seeking some
