Shape of the Sun's daily motion

This is related to noon sights, and potentially using sights along the transit instead. The Sun moves in a circle as the celestial sphere rotates around the Earth (from the perspective of Earth), but from the perspective of one location on the Earth's surface, what is the shape? An elipse? or actually a circle? If you could see through the Earth, would the Sun circumscribe a complete true circle?
