If the stretch of water Renee is taking altitudes over doesn't reach to the horizon he can use a "Dip Short" table. In volume II of the 1975 "Bowditch" it's Table 22, "Dip of the Sea Short of the Horizon." In the 1981 edition of Norie's Nautical Tables it's on page 453. It's been around for more than two hundred years, at least since Moore's "New Practical Navigator."
