All: During our extended layover at Sydney Harbor the skipper came into some un-explained money. He promptly spent it on a new boat. Silicon Sea II is a cutter rigged Van De Stadt 48' boat built in Sydney, Australia. Applicable details will be found listed in the "NOTE:" section at the bottom of each problem page. The on board crew for planning purposes will be listed as eight. In practical small boat navigation accuracy to the nearest minute of arc or to one decimal place is MORE than needed. Answers are given greater detail than this because they are generated by computer. As usual, this is a navigation excersize, not a simulation. Data is obtained from USDMA Pilot Charts Pub 107, 1981,Ed.; Ocean Passages for the World, 1973 Ed.; Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes, 1995 Ed.; National Geographic Atlas of the World, Revised Sixth Edition, and what data is available within the Working Group or via the Internet. ****************************Cut Here************************************* Chart(s): Plotting Sheet, any ATLAS Route Planning and Dead-Reckoning problem Leg 46 231999 Test your knowledge! ---------------------- ------ ------ ------ -------------- Planning Routes--Port Jackson to Boston Port Jackson(Sydney) Departure--33d 50.8'S 151d 18.0'E Tasman Sea Waypoint 1-----------34d 00.0'S 151d 40.0'E Tasman Sea Waypoint 2-----------38d 40.0'S 166d 45.0'E Destination N of Stephens Is.---40d 50.0'S 174d 00.0'E Wellington Departure Point------41d 30.0'E 175d 20.0'E Cape Horn-----------------------56d 04.0'S 67d 15.0'W Port Stanley, Falkland Is.------51d 40.0'S 57d 40.0'W Mid-Atlantic Waypoint-----------00d 00.0'N 23d 00.0'W Barbados------------------------13d 10.0'N 59d 20.0'W Cape Cod------------------------58d 00.0'N 70d 00.0'W Boston--------------------------42d 20.0'N 70d 46.0'W 1) Using our waypoints, what is the TOTAL rumbline distance we will travel to Boston? -- ---------------------------------------------- ------------------- 2) At an estimated speed of 8.4 Knots, how many days is the total trip? -- ---------------------------------------------- ---------------- We will have a total of 8 crew when we depart Wellington.
