Bear in mind that there is a bit of smoke and mirrors here. We don't have detailed track data on Slocum's voyage. It is very likely that the logbook from the voyage was with Slocum when he was lost at sea a decade later. The creator of this "kmz" has simply connected the dots between recorded landfalls in the book. He's also repeated Slocum's error with respect to the names of the islands in the Marquesas. This has led him to extend the track up to the main island of the Marquesas where we know from Slocum's own account that he only saw the southernmost island off in the distance.

For comparison, I'm attaching an image with copies of the various maps that were published in the original SAATW. These maps, like the kmz file, are really just artists' representations based on the evidence in the book. One advantage is that that the original maps were almost certainly reviewed by Joshua Slocum himself before the book was published. Naturally the kmz file, viewed in Google Maps, has all the advantages of that product including, among other things, the fact that it is a globe, so there are fewer distortions from mapping projections, or at least they are more predictable.
