Well, no one has bit on this yet, so let me get you started on a probable culprit for Nial's specific case. Smartphones use A-GPS (in normal use on or near land): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS. Whether they can transition to pure GPS may depend on a variety of factors. Whether they can become confused by cached A-GPS data is yet another question.
How many of you have used GPS positioning from a smartphone while flying cross-country?
