    Split-horizon vs. whole-horizon sextant mirrors
    From: Bruce Stark

There's a good discussion of advantages and disadvantages of the two kinds of
sextant horizon mirror at the STARPATH home page: http://www.starpath.com/
In the Celestial Navigation section, subsection Home Study Course, click on
    Frequently Asked Questions or FAQ's.

I much prefer the split-horizon, but my experience over the last twenty years
has largely been in measuring lunar distances. My Tables for Clearing the
Lunar Distance can be found in the Sight Reduction section of CELESTAIR's
    catalog: http://www.celestaire.com/catalog/Sight_Reduction/Other_Tables/
