    I didn't (intend to) say "rising in the west". What I meant is that
    they apparently had to go in west direction to be able to see a
    particular situation in the sky (at least) in the dawn (morning
    twilight), which further east, where they came from, wouldn't have
    been visible due to the daylight. This assumes that they had a
    knowledge on how the visible sky changes by travelling in east/west
    direction. May be they learned also how the position of the moon
    changes relative to the other stars by travelling in north/south
    direction.
    
    My reflections are now that the 3 Magi may have associated the birth
    of a king to a location where a particular situation in the sky was
    *visible*. From their observations they may have been able to conclude
    that in order to see this event they would have to travel x days to
    the east and y days e.g. to the south, realising that this would
    correspond to Jerusalem.
