The Skyscout does not provide altitudes.

The Skyscout provides the Right Ascension and Declination of the object, along with its Name.

Hope that clarifies it a bit. The altitudes I provided are from my (apparently defective) spreadsheet.

The Skyscout did indicate Alphard and Sirius as the objects. Further, the sextant was
    horizontal.

Well, Brad, what stars did your Skyscout tell you it was looking at, then?
And how come it provided you with two altitudes that differed by 9 , when
at that time Alphard and Sirius had the same altitude within a few
arc-minutes? Was it Alphard and Sirius that you were observing, when
measuring distance between two stars? If they were, your sextant would have
    been exactly horizontal. Was it?
