    Hello Brad,

    You indicated that :

[QUOTE] Some on this list view it as a low precision device. Its not accurate enough to preset your sextant, but it does serve to locate the brightest stars (the 57 navigational stars).[UNQUOTE]

    I will fully agree here.

I will even add that that I did now and then use a Star Finder to preset my sextant to catch some faint star, a task which was successful if Star Finder very carefully set.

A (carefully preset) Star Finder also works (quite well I should say) for azimuth determination in Celnav. I also happened to use this short cut method to avoid going through Azimuth Computing Tables. As I could later rework such Fixes with modern computing tools, I concluded that using azimuths derived from a Star Finder did not significantly degrade the accuracy of such CelNav Fixes then.

    Best Regards

    Kermit

PS : Do not divulge this "secret confession" (about Azimuth Determination Star Finder shortcut) to my former Commanding Officer (now a retired ***** French Navy Admiral) : he once had to admit that I could compute my LOP's incredibly fast in those days ! :-)
