I attended Frank's excellent 3 day course, 3 hours per day. When Frank pulled up this National Geographic image, I reached for my Cleomedes' Lectures on Astronomy (A Translation of The Heavens), thinking that Frank was heading for Eratosthenes' famous calculation of the size of the earth from the bowl sundial at Syrene Egypt, a city a bit north of Abu Simbel. He didn't go there, but it was a nice reminder of where this form of CN began...me thinks.
