    I guess what we need to do here is define terms.  Positioning to me
    equals fix or similar.  Chuck is correct that using such a technique is
    useful in "life boat navigation", but life boat navigation tell you
    weather your closer to North America or Europe and which way to row. ;-)
     It's not something I'd want to use as my basis in making decisions in
    making a land fall.  Likewise, some believe that a two body fix is also
    not accurate enough for making land fall.  That's not to say that it
    hasn't been done.
    To answer your question about "how close":  It depends on your ability
    to allow for the variables.
