Description: Very Good. Book Bound in pig skin The title page is missing. Publication details are taken from the ESTC, No. S95920. The full title of this work is given as, many= with= wright= edw: = by= corrected= and= detected= in= errors= certaine=> additions that were not in the former edition as appeareth in the next pages-ESTC. The division of the whole art of navigation, a translation of Compendio de la arte de navegar by Rodrigo de Zamorano, has separate pagination and register. With 'An Addition touching the variation of the Compasse' to the rear. This copy is missing the map as usual (the last copy sold with the map-the Macclesfield copy sold for 170, 000 at auction) Four leaves, 441-444 and 453-456 are missing. With an armorial bookplate for Queen's College, Oxford to the front pastedown, with a 'Sold by Order' ink stamp. Edward Wright, d. 1615, was an English mathematician and cartographer. The impetus for Wright's publication of the first edition of Certaine Errors came from his outrage at two apparent cases of plagiarism. A well-regarded navigator, Abraham Kendall, died at sea (1596) in possession of a manuscript copy of Wright's work, and this text, retrieved and brought to London, was taken to be Kendall's own, until it was passed to Wright for his review. At roughly the same time the cartographer Jodocus Hondius (15631612), who was deeply chagrined upon the discovery of his borrowing, used Wright's methods without acknowledgement in one of his maps-ODNB. Condition: A pleasingly original and unrestored copy. The text-block binding is generally tight and firm although the cords are exposed in several places. The inner hinges have failed and the text-block has come away from the case. The 'Compasse variation' pages to the rear are held by the cords only. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping and rubbing with some small closed tears and discolouration. There are small two holes to the frontboard and a score mark to thespine. Internally the pages have slightage toning as usualwith occasional handling marks and spots. The first and lasttwo leaves have slight chips and small closed tears. There are a few repairs to margins of pages. There are Queen's College, Oxford, small ink stamps to the title page and the last page. There are ink inscriptions to the front pastedown andverso of the front blank. Overall the condition is fair with a good interior. An important and scarce work.
