    Symposium at Greenwich
    From: George Huxtable
    Date: 2010 Jan 23, 00:36 -0000

The prigramme for the symposium at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich,
has recently appeared on the NMM website. It will be on May 6th (pm) and May
7th. It's titled "A sense of direction" and is intended to give
broad-ranging coverage of History of Navigation.

The website of the NMM itself can be found at http://www.nmm.ac.uk/

A bit of searching within it brings up the following-

Booking Form (which is also attached) at-
    http://www.nmm.ac.uk/upload/pdf/Booking_form_-_A_Sense_of_Direction.pdf

A listing of the symposium programme at-
    http://www.nmm.ac.uk/researchers/conferences-and-seminars/senseofdirection

and a list of abstracts at-
    http://www.nmm.ac.uk/upload/doc/Navigation_Symposium_abstracts.doc

There are several names there which will be familiar to Navlist members. On
the Thursday morning (6th), before lunch (after which the symposium starts)
    two visits are scheduled-

    1. Jonathan Betts, the museum's horologist, fresh from repairing and
restarting Harrison's H1 chronometer, will be dismantling his H2 timepiece
for its first overhaul since Rupert Gould revived it in the 1920s. He will
be doing the job in public view, brave fellow.

    2. Tthere will be group visits to the Museum's off-site backup store. I've
been there twice before, and can confirm that it's full of all sorts of
interesting goodies that haven't found a place in the main museum. For
example, Geoffrey Kolbe has reported on inspecting there some MHR1 German
    versions of the Bygrave.

These visits, limited in numbers, are likely to be quickly booked up, so
you are advised not to delay.

I expect to see a good half-dozen Navlist members there, with a garnishing
of wives. There will be a reception, drinks provided, on the Thursday night,
after which there will probably be an ad-hoc wandering-off together by
participants to a local hostelry for a meal (at least, that's what happened
at the last such event, two years ago). I wonder if an informal gathering of
the Navlist participants on another evening would be welcome? It rather
depends on who expects to be in Gteenwich, when. The best time seems perhaps
to be the Wednesday evening; what do others suggest?

    George.
