I believe the books about traditional Applalachian living, the FoxFire books if I remember, told how to make tallow from animal fat and lye got from wood ashes...it was part of soap making. They also told how to make black gunpowder from the nitrates got from an outhouse! I saw a web site relating to them years ago.-Ken
