Dan,
Ah sooo,
The quality of the workmanship is superb.
Now shoot a round of star sights this evening and make a comparison, and for a real test try it off a pitching deck, and tell us the results. ;-)
IMO, there are two fundemental things that increase the abilty to make difficult sights. Larger mirrors, and a scope with a wide field of view.
All the best,
Joel Jacobs

I have a Tamaya Venus sextant and I think it is a terrific little unit. It is very well made and has a good feel to it. It does feel rather small compared to full-sized sextants, but I have large hands. On land I did some shots of the sun with it and compared them to my actual GPS position, and here were the results:2.73 nmi-0.46 nmi-0.83 nmi-0.31 nmi-0.86 nmi-0.53 nmi-0.99 nmi-1.58 nmi-0.74 nmi-0.51 nmi-0.23 nmi-0.85 nmi-0.55 nmi-0.54 nmifor an average error of -0.44 nmi. Not bad.Dan-----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: Tamaya Venus MS-933In those days my company Nautech Maritime Corporation was the importer of all Tamaya navigation instruments and was instrumental in the design of the MS 733, 833, 933, and NC 2 Navigation calculator. Ken Gebhart used to buy his Tamaya sextants from us as did all other companies. We are still incontact with the past owner of Tamaya today. Here is a link to what I recalled about the first Venus sextant that was sent us as a pre-production sample. It was never a big seller, maybe because I didn't beleive in reduced size sextants. There was a discussion about their limitations by this group.BTW, Nautech was sold to Coast Navigation in Sept, 1978, and in Nov, Julie and I embarked on six years of ocean cruising in our 62 foot ketch, Bagheera. All great memories. Merry Christmas,Joel Jacobs--
