That's how I checked mine, as well. I found out through Google that if you drew a line from one corner of my roof to one corner of my neighbor's roof, it would run exactly North-South. So, I stood in my backyard and adjusted my position until the corners appeared to align, one directly over the other. I then took a bearing...: 10°, exactly right for the magnetic declination in this area.
