Hmmm. I think I could do one better Frank. I would propose to meet him in Halifax or St. Johns and we could have a training cruise to Iqaluit, along the Labrador coast. It would be a navigational baptism of fire. Much of the coast is poorly charted with a lot of blank white spots (here be dragons), there are numerous reefs, rocks, icebergs and other evil spirits. Once you get far enough north, you are on your own: no immediate coast guard assistance, no helicopter rescue, no VHF coverage, no weather reports (unless you have a sat phone) no wharfs or communities to pull into. You gotta be on the ball....but it would be gas to do that voyage in a Nordhavn! Ever since I saw a brochure on them, they have been my dream boat.
Anyway the celestial lessons could be taught during those frequent times when we are holed up in a remote anchorage due to gales and storms.
But there would have to be ground rules: Margaritaville could only be sung once during the voyage. The rest of the time, we listen to XM Radio (the jazz stations). And he has to bring his own sextant. I'll bring the XM radio.
As for a tiki bar on the beach, that would be a sight to see. He'd be fighting off the ravens and the seagulls - the Hells Angels of the avian family -- of which there are many up here.
Robert
