Byron: It amaze me that the books and many schools teaches pick the center for a fix <180 degrees. This same problem is with taking bearing with a compass on a chart. Check the Franklin Piloting Technique. Sailors will never be motivated to navigate buy equipment and be happy until the big boys with teaching, wise up, and start teaching things that work and are true. The Navy teaches some truth but, with all the false information workable information is hard to find.
