    Nothing new : this formula has already been posted here and it has been taught for probably (almost and maybe more) one century now.
    When I wrote my Navigation paper, I found nothing about the phenomenon, and had to derive the equation. I later found a simplified version of it was in the Admiralty Navigation Manual, which had been out of print for decades.
     
    Many ostensible teachers have ignored the effect of vessel motion and declination change. And the "equal altitudes" method ignoring that is still popular. It's quoted in the Davis manual.
