Anybody who doesn't mind books that partly "philosophise and wander, often
at great discursive length" should also have a look at Kristen Lippicott
(Ed.), The Story of Time, London 1999, issued by the NMM. Though it looks
like - and probably is used as - a coffee table book, it contains a
multitude of pictures and in depth explanations pertaining to the notion and
measurement of time in European tradition but also in other cultures
    (Islamic, Chinese, Indian, Inuit etc.).
It is quaint, though, that despite the fact that Kristen Lippicott is Deputy
Director of the Royal Observatory not a single picture of a Harrison clock
or watch can be found in the book.
