There were two new theories involving physics and the sinking of Titanic which both were released with much media attention about thirteen months ago, just before the centennial of the sinking of Titanic. One theory involved tides, and it's junk, in my judgment. But the refraction theory, developed by Tim Maltin, is clever and does possibly resolve some otherwise puzzling observations. The cold North Atlantic on a nearly calm Spring night is an ideal setting for anomalous refraction phenomena, far greater than moderate variations in the horizon. Mirages could easily have caused long-distance visibility problems and illusions. There were numerous articles on this theory last year. Here's one:
