The discussion of trans-atlantic cables reminded me of a very enjoyable restaurant I used to visit in Co. Wicklow. It is called Tinakilly House. Built by Robert Halpin who was first engineer on the Great Eastern when she laid the first transatlantic cable... now you are all wondering what this has to do with navigation. Well, the cable broke after laying 1862 miles of the 2600 mile length. Apparently Halpin returned later to the place where it broke and grappled it to the surface repaired the cable and finished the job. This surely must have required some navigation skills. I have searched the web, but there is scant information about this. Below was the site I found the information about Halpin. www.tinakilly.ie/Pages/history.html Aubrey.
