Hi Frank Worley's navigation is one of the two really spectacular small boat journeys. http://www.nmm.ac.uk/explore/sea-and-ships/in-depth/epic-small-boat-journeys The navigation is of interest to the list but the journey itself catches the attention of the public at large. George has pointed out the large number of books related to this expedition, the large number simply because it has caught the public attention. Not one of those books references this log. At best, they reference the semi-transcript in the Dennett book, which removes all of those squiggly numbers. What we have is unique! This relates well back to the "Whaling and Navigation" topic, where we discussed what would be an appropriate log book. Worsley didn't use Norie's recommendation nor Bowditch's recommendation. He simply kept his book in a way that made sense to him. And now it makes sense to us. Perhaps obvious in hindsight, but this has been a voyage of discovery for me! I wouldn't have expected Worsley to use any of the "New Navigation". Shackleton employed him because he was a talented and proven navigator. This would have been honed before he joined the expedition across Antarctica. Those skills would have be developed in the 1890's (maybe before). Your point about what was in vogue is apropos. He would have learned how to navigate from those who used Time Sights. That "worked" and he would have continued this, even if something "better" was available, simply because what he was doing was conservative.
