John Huth was keen to see what A R T Jonkers has to say about Mercator's view of Earth magnetism, so here are two scans that cover it, from "Earth's magnetism in the days of sail", 2003.

The connection between the polar map, that John drew to our attention, and Gerard Medrcator, seems somewhat tenuous, to say the least. The map dates from 30 years after Mercator's death, and includes stuff from Barents' Arctic voyaging. Nor, being a polar map, is it on Mercator's projection.

Still, I repeat my request to John to identify the source of the high-resolution image that he has located. And the name of the Russian commentator and a reference and date for his text.

    George.
