George, as to your request for a good reproduction of the 1569 map: go to www.wilhelmkruecken.de/. On the left side there is Gerhard Mercator, click on his name and on the page that is following you can choose between different size reproductions and also 18 enlarged portions of the map. Wilhelm Krcken is a retired teacher (of the Mercator-Gymansium in Duisburg I think) who has done a lot of research on Mercator which you can find on his web site. He has just published his material in 2 volumes - alas in German, that terrible language. He also published a facsimile of the map with accompanying explanations "Gerhard Mercator Weltkarte ad usum navigantium, Duisburg 1569 / verkleinert reproduziert nach dem Originaldruck der Universittsbibliothek zu Basel ; herausgeben von Wilhelm Krcken u. Joseph Milz." (Duisburg 1994) a copy of which is in the BL. Best regards Wolfgang
