    I was going to mention that you may want to calibrate your device with some 
    observations of objects at fixed angular separations since you can't really 
    be sure about the baseline of your triangles to better than about half an 
    inch. That 4.1' average error could probably be reduced a bit. 
    
    As for scatter (the full range from max negative error to max positive error), 
    it's not really a useful statistical measure. It's better to look at the 
    standard deviation, which I find for your numbers is just about 6'. That's 
    right in line with observational experiments that I've done (and seen done) 
    with cross-staffs, which is what you've got there. So that's looking very 
    reasonable. I doubt you could get much better in terms of statistical spread 
    without some means of looking in two directions simultaneously; for example 
    via the double reflection principle of the sextant.
