As to how a mariner could read the sextant under poor conditions, the answer is maybe they couldn't, or "by guess and god", which is possibly why a lot of ships went down.
Speaking from a state of having rather old eyes, somewhat improved via recent cataract surgery, I'm rather glad that these days, sextants come with drum micrometers. They are a hell of a lot easier to read, even though my sextant shots are always taken standing, sometimes sitting, on Terra Firma. Some things, sextants do improve with the passage of time.
