Byron: Hope this will bring this topic to an end. The subject of the Polaris submarine and today’s better
subs and the better Navigation is top secret and beyond top secret. On my sub only two persons
ever saw the charted location as the sub was on patrol. The on board equipment was worked on by others to keep it running, but even they working on the equipment were not to know the location of the sub while on patrol. They and other crew had no reason to know. As long as the Captain and the officer of the deck knew they were in good waters and equipment knew where it was, there was no reason for anyone to know where we were in a very, very large area. That was the safely factor No one on the beach even the President, and no one on board needed to know.Beleve me, they were looking for us, The danger of someone knowing where we were and possible repeat of being the same large areas was not to be. A copy cat pattern was not to be. A different and unpredictable pattern was the satiety factor and if no one on board knew where and when we went to any area, the better and safer. No one needed to know, only the equipment needed to know. On the sub, I ran the underway navigation with one other Quartermaster,(the less the better) but I could not give a hint to where to look for another sub then or today. The purpose is no one needs to know.
