It should be mentioned that the simultaneous observation of the zenith distance and azimuth of a single celestial object at a given GMT, as is possible with a pier-mounted theodolite at a fixed point, yields both longitude and latitude. The solution of the corresponding geometric problem is straightforward, but is not within the scope of this paper.

An amazing physicist! I recently spoke with a colleague who talked about how he was inspired to make a receiver that could tune into atomic resonant bands that Van Allen found. This got him into physics in the first place.

In one of his many papers (Am. J. Phys. 72 (11), November 2004, pp. 1418-1424) Van Allen briefly mentions the "one-body fix:"
