I recently completed the examination and restoration of a late eighteenth century sextant that I think may be of interest to those members who enjoy looking at sextants. I have written an illustrated account and, since it is quite lengthy with 20 high resolution photos, I have posted it on my blog at www.sextantbook.com, rather than on this site. There are three ways to find the post: it is the latest under "sextant restorations"; it is the only one posted so far in June 2010; and you can enter "210 years on" as a search term.
I raise some questions about the instrument's date, the material of its arc and the design of the index error adjustment and side error adjustment, probably both due to Peter Dollond. I would be very glad to hear from members more expert than I in those fields.
