I think I've witnessed the most unusual method of determing height of eye. When I was to teach a group of scouts a little about celestial navigaiton on the brigantine Exy Johnson, I asked the captain what the height of eye was. He didn't know, but a crewman promply climbed over the side and dangled down until his feet were near the water. He said that he was six feet tall, and I could easily add four more to get a HE of ten feet.
