Dan-Actually there are two "the midpoint"s. IIRC which one/way you point at the sun flips depending on the hemisphere, so discussions about "the" midpoint and the hemisphere may seem to conflict. From personal use, it works fairly well at 43N but with a higher sun as seen from 30N it is much harder to tell direction. And, one needs to throw out Daylight Slavings Time before one gets started. Haven't remembered to try it any further north or south, but Mark Trail recommended it without reservation.
