Alex asked- | | To the old members of the Old List: | Does anyone know why Jan Kalivoda no longer seems | to be on the list? And how to contact him. | When I joined the (old) list in 2003 or so, | he was still a member. I remember this name very well. | But only now I read his messages on the Lunars from the old list | and I am very impressed with his scholar attitude and knowledge. | I want to contact him. | Alex. Reply from George. Jan was one of the most knowledgeable members of the old list, and I regret that we have lost him. He is still around, and makes interesting, and learned, contributions, to the Hastro mailing list (history of astronomy). Those who appreciate Jan's grasp of the finer details of spherical trig may be surprised to discover that he is a classics scholar, on the staff of the classics department at the prestigious Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. His email address is - jan.kalivoda@ff.cuni.cz The latest writing I have seen on navigation, from Jan's pen, is in the pages of "Navigator's Newsletter", Summer 2006, in which he reviewed Bruce Stark's "Tables for clearing the lunar distance ...". Quite a coincidence that, as questions have also been asked about Bruce's activities. And Bruce is part way through a series of articles, in "Navigator's Newsletter", about Lewis and Clark's navigation. So Bruce is still active in the field, but no longer on this list, it seems.
