I have to agree with Sean's comment on the NA
concise tables. I have gone on at length about them in previous comments to this
list. That Stan finds them easier than 229 is a testament to a sharp
mind. Regrettably, I just can't wrap my mind around them. Too many steps,
too tedious and too many opportunities for arithmetic errors. This is not a set
of tables I would want to use in a stressful situation.

Methods I have tried in descending order of preference:1. HO 229 - super fast and makes me feel connected to "old" methods, which is why I like C.N. in the first place.
2. Flat Bygrave - not as fast, but fascinating to me nonetheless.
3. Scientific calculator - relatively quick, compact, and I already have several laying around.
4. 'Regular' slide rule - not very accurate, but has the same appeal as the Bygrave.
5. HO 249 - would probably be higher on my list if I just used it more.
6. Computer/Phone app - seems to me you might as well just use a GPS. However, they are quite handy when you don't have anything else.
7. N.A. concise tables - sure, they're tables just like HO 229...and a valuable backup. But have you ever tried using them? I don't think it could get much more complicated. (And yes, Geoffrey, I do still use them from time to time. ;) )I also enjoy the classic noon sight and ex-meridians. I only recently learned ex-meridians thanks to Jeremy C's posts re the same topic.-Sean C
