Besides I suppose most navigators remember which way they faced when taking altitude:-) Especially when this was Sun:-) And all these formulas need some rule: the Almanac and PS formulas give you cos A, you still need to think whether is is E or W. (See Step 4, on p. 279 of the Almanac). Alex.
