I see I made two errors in rewriting the N.A. azimuth formula, it should be: cos A = (sin Dec cos Lat - cos Dec cos LHA sin Lat)/cos Hc I see that the N.A. formula is more universal but it is tedious and the shorter, more common, formula produces the same results with many fewer keystrokes. Each keystroke adds an additional opportunity to make an error. As I stated before, I don't believe that figuring out what quarter the azimuth is in is really a problem for practical navigators since you know what way you were facing, a glance at the compass will tell you this if it was not already obvious and if it is so close to east or west to make this difficult then the resulting LOP will have negligible error from identifying the wrong quadrant. gl --- On Mon, 4/9/12, Geoffrey Kolbe <geoffreykolbe@compuserve.com> wrote:
