I wrote: "the idea that there will be an emergency situation where you would lose GMT with no means of recovery is pretty outlandish!" Peter, you replied: "Well, no. We don't agree this is outlandish at all. Pretty much par for the course, in our experience. Have sailed with 3 GPS units and had all 3 inoperative at the same time, due to different issues." Of course the best backup for an integrated GPS system is a hand-held GPS receiver in a nicely sealed case (with spare batteries). But I didn't say GPS; I said GMT. How many times have you lost track of GMT?? Let's be empirical about this rather than theoretical: how many people do you know who have lost all track of Greenwich Time on an ocean-going vessel? How many times in the past 25 years has this happened to anyone in the world? Do you know of any real examples where there was an emergency in which someone lost track of GMT, had no wristwatch, no radio, BUT still had an excellent sextant and navigational tables? Maybe it's happened lots of times, and I just haven't heard. Maybe not. -FER --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to NavList@fer3.com To , send email to NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
