This is a response to Paul Hirose's comment, copied below, and a follow-up to my original message earlier today. Paul said- >I too have noticed the inconsistent "Reply-To" fields, just as George >described. Some messages by default send replies to the originator >only. In Netscape I would have to use the Reply All button with these >messages to send a reply to the list. And I'd have to manually delete >the originator from the To list, as otherwise that person would get a >double. > >-- > > >paulhirose@earthlink.net (Paul Hirose) ============= I have found (using Eudora) that if I choose to reply to a Navigation-L posting, then if the resulting return-address in the "To" field is given as that of the original author rather than that of the list, what I have to do is to delete that entry and instead enterThat works. ================ My final comment was- >In addition, it appears that perhaps some messages that I send to >navigation-l are not being received and acknowledged, though no "bounce" >message comes back to me. Has this happened to anyone else or is it just >me? Now I think I know why, with Dan Hogan's help. It appears that the Navigation-L server has been discarding certain messages, without informing the sender about it. It's a bit tricky to explain why, without the same thing happening to THIS message! To avoid that happening, I will introduce a few "*" symbols here and there. Wherever you see a * symbol, from now on, just ignore it. Pretend it isn't there. It's been introduced simply to trick the server into not rejecting THIS message. The messages that have been rejected have all concerned the topic of inconsistencies in the "Reply-*to:" field, so, unsurprisingly, each contained, within the text, a quotation such as- > Some messages that I have recently received, such as those from Bill Allen, > Brian Whatcott, Yves Arrouye, have a reply-to address of- > > Reply-*To: Navigation Mailing List > > which is what I would expect. (note, and in your mind delete, that *) Dan has copied to me an error message which the server sent to him (and not to me), referring to the discarded mailing, which starts as follows- >The enclosed message, found in the NAVIGATION-L mailbox and shown under the >spool ID 2243710 in the system log, has been identified as a possible delivery >error notice for the following reason: "Sender*:", "From*:" or >"Reply-*To:" >field pointing to the list has been found in mail body. (Again, all the * symbols have been added to this message by me, to confuse the server.) So beware, especially if a thread should develop about this topic of the contents of the "Reply-*to:" field. The server looks for such references within the body of the text you send, and if it doesn't like what it sees, it throws your posting into the bin. It took me some time to discover this, and other listmembers might like to be warned about it in advance.
