I should add: I'm teaching a course to undergrads, where celestial navigation is only one part of more material. I use the equal altitude method in an assignment where they observe (from a stationary position) the altitude of the sun over the course of a day and extract latitude and longitude using equal altitudes. I hate to say it, but the mathematical preparation of some of the students is quite poor.

I may not live long enough for the popular myth that the simple averaging
of times of observed equal altitudes is dispelled.
