    Greg,
The Ocean Navigator articles were informative.  I was surprised to learn that a celestial-only boat came in first across  the line.  As Frank pointed out one can gain a lot of advantage using weather gribs and satellite info to detect and use eddies in the Gulf Stream that pooch out 20 or 30 miles from the main stream. But this article about Marvin Creamer is amazing!  I recently read The Haven Finding Art by E.G.R. Taylor and the earlly chapters there suggested to me that much could be done using zenith stars alone.  But for someone actually to have done it!  Not even a compass!  I have another hero to add to my pantheon, and one with the delightful name of Marvin Creamer. Thanks for the reference!

    Alan,

Marvin Creamer was able to DR around the world. No electronics, sextant, or watch. Just an hour glass. He was able to successfully latitude sail using zenith stars. My clutch of navigation tools now seems excessive.

Regarding Don Ho. He passed in 2007 yet still remains as a Hawaiian Icon through his recordings.
