On Aircraft too, Magnetic Compass is not dead at all, - if ever used to-day though ... - and it remains as a HARD REQUIREMENT , unless you have for example (B757/767) : - 3 independent Inertial Navigation Systems fully operational, or - 2 INS's fully operational and exclusively fly under positive ground radar control throughout your flight, - AND provided Stand-by Magnetic Compass is repaired within 3 days at the most. This makes a hefty number of conditions ! Actually, most of the time, if not always, all these very nice modern Navigation Systems are UP and work very well ! But, for Aircraft not having the same extensive Navigation Capabilities as do current Medium/Long Haulers to-day, the "no stand-by magnetic compass" situation equates to : "no standby Magnetic Compass, no Flite" (of course if you know it is down ... before flight), exactly as horseriders will say : "no foot, no horse" !
