Gary, I agree that the sonar would have given a warning too late. Also, active sonar may not have been an option since this is part of an official marine sanctuary for marine mammals. But the ship's speed and position were known (surely!) and the region is charted in great detail. With no active sensors at all, software would have detected the impending disaster. I would be very surprised if they did not have such software installed. If the captain had the option to turn it off or mute its alarms, then that will have to change.

By the way, I was reading an Italian newspaper online this afternoon, and divers have indeed explored to impact site at the outer end of the "Scole" reef. They say it's a wreck out there with lots of sheet metal debris.
