Alex, you asked originally: "What is the exact formula for refraction (for stars) used in the Almanac?" Just to make sure it's not an issue, the formula quoted in the explanation in the Nautical Almanac (the one that's been posted here) is not used in the creation of the table in the front of the almanac. That formula in the explanation is included for folks using handheld calculators.
