    John,

There is yet an other possibility, namely radiosonde weather data which are measured twice daily. You just would use then the station data and skip those for the the upper air. The Solomon Islands appear to have the following stations:

    Apia (91742, ----)
Apia / Upolu Island (91762, NSAP)
    Asau (91740, ----)
    Avao (91757, ----)
    Avata (91755, ----)
    Cape Matatula (91766, ----)
    Cape Tapanga (91763, ----)
    Cape Taputapu (91764, ----)
    Faleolo (91739, ----)
    Faleolo Airport (91758, ----)
Faleolo Intl / Apia (91759, NSFA)
    Ta'U (91768, ----)

Unfortunately I could not find any data for all of them. I do not know whether these stations were really ever operative. There seems only one station to be operative in the area, the one at Pago Pago on American-Samoa (91765). If this would be of use to you I suggest you use the data set from IGRA where the data of all soundings from this station (since 1966) are compiled in one text file. I suggest you start with the readme.txt file which you find in this ftp-folder here
    ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/igra/

This obviously requires a little program which parses the data and retrieves/analyses those of interest.

I hope this is of use to you and your colleague.

    Marcel
