The market obviously disagrees. In such a free market, and society, anyone can decide to put together such a camel as designed by a committee as George has described, and if they sell enough copies then I imagine that the project has been a success, as far as their interest in the matter extends. Let's be practical about this.
Do we expect (let alone get) such luverley piccies in Bowditch (for example)? I don't imagine that we would want them either, if they meant the resulting book was inconveniently bulky or more expensive. Horses for courses, surely.
I note that George thinks the book is a credit to this bookshelves despite its flaws, and agree with this assessment - apparently the images make up for much else, which I think is probably a realistic attitude to adopt, overall.
Its a pity people from this List can't be involved with the wordsmith component of such books, as such involvement should, presumably, lead to better text.
