For observers in North America, especially, there's a nice little map and
some other observing info on the "Sky & Telescope" web site here: http://skytonight.com/observing/home/4548556.html
From here in Chicago, the transit will be visible for about 3 hours, 20
minutes before the Sun sets. The apparent diameter of Mercury transiting the Sun
is something like 9 arc seconds, 200 times smaller than the Sun's apparent
diameter. That's just barely visible through a sextant (shades down) if you have
a moderately powerful telescope attached.
