Dan-There are canned emergency "balloons" on the market. Basically a mylar helium balloon in a sealed metal can under pressure, so it actually opens up and expands when the can is open. These were I think originally designed for divers in the water as well as small craft, to make a larger target out of the small one. More things that are nice IF they work when they are needed. One of the simplest has been a large roll of very thin bright orange plastic--it floats on the water, rolls up into nothing, and spotting a 30' long two foot wide orange mark on the water is apparently much easier from the air.
