I had pointed to marinetraffic.com as a useful free site for real-time information on worldwideship movements, as discovered from AIS broadcast information. Carl Herzog commented- "Marinetraffic.com is one of several such sites. Others include: vesseltracker.com, aislive.com and shipais.com." I've taken a quick look at these. They aren't really in the same league, for the likes of us. Vesseltracker appears to be a subscription-only service, with a free demo version delayed for 24 hours to take all the usefulness out of it. Aislive appears to need a subscription, intended for users in the marine trade. Shipais appears to be a free site, set up by, and for, UK ship enthusiasts, but its real-time AIS tracking is taken from marinetraffic.com, so you might as well go there direct. So the alternatives Carl offers are not, for us, a viable improvement.
