I don't know George, I think all the confusion is quite proper. In military terms, the situation about the different definitions is precisely snafu, and the various units only differ from either other by a scoche (the "o" pronounced as in "oh!"). Scoche being another precisely defined military term on this side of the pond. Besides, when your artillery is of a suitable size, if it lands a foot or two off, there'll still be nothing left of the target, or the thousand foot radius that used to be around it. Very much akin to a navigator saying "We're here" and pointing to that other poorly defined location, the circle of position. Calculated tightly, but drawn crudely, and often off by more than a scoche.
